Spotify Playlist: Ultimate Movie Mashup

Here’s my personal all-time ultimate movie soundtrack, which runs the gamut from funk to bluegrass, by way of heavy rock and serene folk. With a few notable exceptions, almost every song on the list comes from a film I absolutely love – fellow critics be damned!

Film Poster: Iron Man 2

A brand spanking new poster for Iron Man 2 has just been released, which shows Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man back to back with his buddy-turned-nemesis-turned-oh-I-don’t-know, War Machine (played in the sequel by Don Cheadle, who replaced Terrence Howard for undisclosed reasons late last year).

I still don’t know how I feel about Cheadle playing War Machine. While I’m a big fan of his, thanks to movies such as Boogie Nights and Hotel Rwanda, I have doubts whether he can bring life to the Rhodey character in the same way as Howard did in the first film.

All the same, the first Iron Man was a great piece of popcorn fodder and I’m most definitely going to catch the sequel when it hits cinemas in May 2010.

Movie News: First images of ‘Karate Kid’ remake

Here are a few newly-released stills from the forthcoming remake of The Karate Kid, which stars Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith (son of Will and Jada Pinkett).

The film, which is being produced by Jaden’s father, has been re-titled The Kung Fu Kid, presumably because having Jackie Chan star as a karate master would be a little far-fetched.

The Kung Fu Kid is due to be released in June 2010.

World of Art: Illustrator’s highly creative marriage proposal

For many people who marry, planning the perfect proposal is almost as important as the ceremony itself.

Australian illustrator Guy Shields came up with the idea to create a series of illustrations with part of the message contained within each one, then piece them all together in a montage to spell out the crucial question.

The most difficult part of the process, says Guy, was to produce the constituent art pieces without giving the game away. To hide the work in progress away from his intended would no doubt arouse suspicion, and he couldn’t very well demonstrate concept sketches bearing the words will, you, marry and me now, could he?

Movie News: ‘Panic Attack’ creator signs deal with Sam Raimi

I posted about this neat little sci-fi flick by Fede Alvarez a few weeks back on Twitter, but its popularity took a recent skyrocket thanks to the news that Evil Dead and Spider Man director Sam Raimi has confirmed a big-budget collaboration with the Uruguay-born filmmaker.

While the story is pretty run-of-the-mill as far as alien invasions go – think Cloverfield meets Independence Day – the production and score are absolutely spot on, so with exposure and backing like this, Alvarez deserves to go far.

Movie Trailer: Ninja Assassin (red band)

For those who missed the first Ninja Assassin trailer I posted last month, fear not! This latest offering brings even more ninja action than its predecessor, complete with buckets of blood and enough unbelievable slow-motion killshots to keep even the most voracious fan of over-the-top action flicks satisfied.

I doubt it’ll win any awards for its dialogue, but Ninja Assassin still tops my current list of films to look forward to before the end of the year.

Video Spotlight: Mario does Queen’s ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’

Has watching a video ever caused you to shake your head and exclaim “Clearly they have too much free time!”, though you are secretly jealous of the sheer awesomeness involved in creating such a spectacle?

Well, prepare to have whatever video you currently hold as “most incredible ever” banished to a distant memory by this one. Using multiple running copies of a modified Super Mario World, someone has set up an almost perfect rendition of the classic song by Queen, using rapid-fire sound effects from the game.

Video Spotlight: Plane Stupid and the polar bears

In this surreal anti-airflight video by campaigners Plane Stupid, we’re told that the average European flight produces 400kg of greenhouse gas per passenger, which works out at roughly the same as an adult polar bear.

Not sure the motif really drives home the point, but the video is certainly striking and is bound to get people talking – something which, in the days of shock campaigns aimed at shaking the non-voters out of their indifference, is almost as important as the message itself.

Video Spotlight: Peaches Geldof says “Like” sometimes

Here, the multi-talented daughter of everyone’s favourite drunken sweary Irish singer and charity concert aficionado (that isn’t Bono) demonstrates her uncanny turkey impression.
